Buying the right video game for someone as a gift

Video games have come a long way since they were first created and there is a massive demand for video games now, more than ever. Buying a video game for someone as a gift can be a great idea. They are reasonably priced and can provide many hours of entertainment for the recipient.

Depending on how much you know about video games, buying one as a gift can either be a daunting task or a relatively simple one. This guide should help make things a little easier for you, whether you are an expert on the subject of video gaming or know very little.

Make sure you buy the right format

There is nothing worse than buying a video game for someone, only to later find out that the game does not work because it was intended for another console. Things can get a bit confusing because most modern console games are supplied on DVD-ROMs, making them all appear similar.

Finding out which console a game was designed for is simple enough, the information can be found on the front of a games case. For example a PS2 game will have, clearly marked on its case, that it is a PS2 game and the same goes for games that are intended for other consoles. For games consoles, buying the correct format is simple enough. You buy a PS2 game for a PS2 console, WII game for a WII console and so on. However, buying PC games is a bit more complicated, because not all PC’s have the same hardware specifications.

PC games usually have minimum requirement details on the back of their cases/boxes. For example, a certain PC game may require at least 256mb of RAM or it may require a graphics card with a particular feature set, for it to run smoothly.

Most PC games will run on a large number of PC’s. It is only when buying new PC games which have just been released, that you may face compatibility issues. Some games may require hardware upgrades or a newer graphics cards, depending on how old a PC’s hardware is.

When buying a PC game as a gift for someone, it is best to buy a game that was released at least a year before that person purchased their PC. You should also try to find out what their PC’s hardware specifications are, so that you can be sure the game you purchase will run on their PC.

Buy a game based on a person’s hobbies and interests

Buying a video game that someone can enjoy is not as hard as it seems. The first thing to determine is what that persons interests are. For example, do they watch a lot of sports or are they interested in a specific genre of music, films, etc. If someone enjoys sports, then you could buy a game based around the types of sports that they enjoy. There are plenty of good games based on soccer, tennis, boxing, basketball, etc. If you know someone that likes to watch historical type programs, then you could buy them a civilization/strategy type of game.

Movies are another great source of inspiration when deciding what games to buy for someone as a gift. The type of movies that a person enjoys watching will usually determine the type of games that they are likely to enjoy. If someone enjoys action/adventure movies, then buying them an action/adventure based video game is a great idea. If someone prefers romance type movies, then buying games such as the Sims, where people can simulate romances, family life, etc, is also a good idea.

Some of the most popular movies are often made into video games or sometimes video games are created which are in some way connected to these movies. If someone really enjoyed a particular movie and a game was created that was linked to this movies, then you could buy this game as a gift for that person.

The most important thing to determine when buying a video game as a gift for someone is what their interests are. Once you know this, then buying the right game for them becomes a whole lot easier.
